THIS SITE IS INACTIVE
On January 1, 2023, Assembly Bill 44 took effect prohibiting the sale of fur products in California.
Unfortunately, we were told that Sidestreet Boutique was still selling fur in early January, and so kept this site active.
Then in early March a roof collapse forced Sidesteet Boutique to shut down.
We wish them well in a speedy re-opening, but sincerely hope that their new store will be fur-free.
Until and unless we hear otherwise, this campaign is inactive.

Most Tahoe residents love animals and would not hurt them. However, Sidestreet Boutique in South Lake Tahoe sells fur products that involve the most heartbreaking types of animal cruelty.
PLEASE WATCH THIS SHORT VIDEO
Sidestreet Boutique’s website(1) says they sell fur from rabbits, minks, raccoons, and foxes. Sadly, making a single fur coat can take as many as 50 rabbits, 60 minks, 20 raccoons, or 15 foxes.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
• Please don't shop at Sidestreet unless they change their behavior.
• Help make it known that Sidestreet is the Worst of Tahoe.
• Learn about Heavenly Cinema's complicity in cruelty.

Frequently asked questions
Watch "A Tale of Two Tahoes"
- Is the violence in this video typical?
Animals raised for fur are often killed by anal/genital electrocution, gassing, or blunt force. These slow and agonizing methods are used to limit damage to fur, and often result in animals being skinned alive.
- Aren't fur animals caught in traps?
Most fur today comes from animals raised on "fur farms", where they spend their entire, miserable lives in tiny wire cages like the ones shown in the video. As for the minority caught in traps, the most commonly used trap has been called inhumane by the American Veterinary Medical Association (it's even banned in the EU).
- Aren't there legal protections for such animals?
There are no federal laws to protect animals on fur farms in the U.S. And the world’s largest fur exporter, China, has no penalties for people who abuse animals on fur farms.
- Do people even buy fur anymore?
Sadly, yes. Over one billion rabbits alone are killed each year for their fur. Tiny body to tiny body, that many rabbits would stretch around the planet more than seven times.
- How did Sidestreet Boutique respond when you contacted them about this issue?
- We communicated our concerns to Sidestreet Boutique multiple times during the months prior to this online campaign. After our initial request was ignored, we held some protests at their store, prior to which we always asked whether they'd changed their mind — and the answer was always "no". We then gave notice about this online campaign, to which they replied "we don't care, our customers love us".
- We really hoped for a quicker resolution to this important issue, but have essentially been ignored for months now. So at this point we're informing the community about what supporting Sidestreet Boutique means, and hope to end local support of animal cruelty that way. Since this campaign was not intended to be against Sidestreet Boutique, but simply against their sale of animal fur, we see this as a very unfortunate step. But given what's involved in the fur trade, and given Sidestreet Boutique's choice to continue participating in that, it has become a necessary step.
- We understand that Sidestreet Boutique is a local business, and of course hope for their success. But not if that success involves unnecessary cruelty to animals.
